Vulcain Chronograph Ref. V2622-A

Pre-Owned Vulcain 38mm Chronograph, Black Dial, Leather Strap, Ref. V2622-A

In the same way the 50’s gave us mid-century modern and the 20’s gave us Bauhaus, there is a certain design that will always be considered modern. This Vulcain Chronograph has that distinctive modern design, even though it was produced in the 70’s. The tonneau stainless steel case and beveled edge appears bulky at first, but it is surprisingly comfortable. With a length a little less than 44m, the curved case rests comfortably against the wrist. The  graduated and revolving black diving bezel turns in either direction and is in excellent condition, turning easily without grabbing , (although it is missing the dot of lume at the 60 mark.) The reverse Panda styled black dial with inclined rehaut is also in excellent condition. The intact tachymeter scale on this watch is often heavily damaged when these references come up for sale. Powered by the Valjoux 7734, a manual-winding, mechanical movement with a 42 hour power reserve, the 7734 is a solid movement that was widely used by higher end watchmakers. The minutes counter appears at the three o’ clock position instead of the 12 o-clock position, and the date indicator appears at the six o’clock position.

This watch has a case with good edges, original brushing on top of case and lugs, and sides that were polished.  The case back has strong original brushing with a few surface scratches from previous openings. The beauty of the watch is in this dial, which is clean and attractive, without visible signs of deterioration or marks. The orange lume minute markers still light up and the hands appear original, although the orange chronograph sweep hand has faded with age. This watch received a recent service and functions well. Attached to the watch is an after market alligator strap that nicely showcases the black and white dial.  Were this watch from a more highly recognized brand, it would cost multiples more, simply based on the design and solid construction. Once discovered, it is hard to imagine that it will soon be forgotten.

Although begun in 1858, Vulcain is perhaps best known for their Cricket model, aka the President’s watch. With its alarm complication that sounded like a small cricket, it was a favorite of Harry Truman, and was later presented to each successive President. Vulcain also earned a reputation for its dive watches. Upon its introduction in the early ‘60s, the Nautical Cricket dazzled not just for its jazzily distinctive dial, but for a then-ingenious system to track decompression times and a unique case design that allowed divers to hear the alarm function underwater with loud clarity.  Less widely known, Vulcain also made an excellent line of chronographs in the sixties and seventies. While the Vulcain chronographs were designed with the then modern flair, they also included well-respected and solid Valjoux movements, making these chronographs precise watches with an ultramodern design that was uniquely their own.
