Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ‘Panda’ Ref. 6239

Vintage Rolex 36mm Cosmograph Daytona, Silver Dial, Oyster Bracelet, Ref. 6239

Any vintage Rolex Daytona is on the top of most collectors wish list. Even if a person is lucky enough to find one, finding one in great or even good condition is difficult. The watch presented here is in excellent condition and should please the discriminating collector.

Every great story has a beginning, including icons such as the Rolex Daytona chronograph.  Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 with the reference 6239.  Intended for race drivers, the chronograph included a tachymeter on the bezel and the word Daytona on the dial.  This Daytona reference 6239 features the early bezel (based on the highest unit being 300), as well as an early hour hand that is longer than later examples.

In excellent condition with light surface scratches on the case and bezel, the watch is free of large marks or even smaller nicks, and still has the brushing on top of and between the lugs. The steel case shows signs of light polishing but the lugs are nice and thick.

The sunburst silver dial is very attractive, with only the smallest marks that can be seen under magnification. The paint on the sub-registers is stunning. The original tritium lume is intact, glowing brightly under UV light and quickly fading, as expected. The Oyster bracelet has practically zero stretch and the expandable rivet links are in excellent condition.

For any watch from this era, it is an attractive watch that has a beautiful wrist presence.  Add to this that the watch is the first reference Rolex Daytona in excellent condition, it makes this a very special watch.

Rolex is recognized throughout the world not only as a brand associated with luxury, but as a watch that is both luxurious and precise.  For Rolex, this hard-won and well-deserved recognition was never in doubt.  The founder, Hans Wilsdorf named the company Rolex so as to be pronounceable in any language as he anticipated the acclaim his company would receive due to relentless pursuit of precision and accuracy in a wristwatch.  Soon after its founding, Rolex produced the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, which was followed rapidly by receipt of a certificate of precision from the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.  From those roots Rolex built a legacy of innovation.  The “Oyster” watch was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch in 1926, followed by the first self-winding “Perpetual” rotor.  Building once again on innovation, the “Datejust” became the first self-winding wrist chronometer to include a date in a window on the dial.  Adventurous women and men who strive to achieve what was never before been achieved have chosen Rolex for their expedition, which both perpetuates the brand’s claim to precision and dependability as well as attests to its veracity.  Hans Wilsdorf may have anticipated the acclaim Rolex would someday achieve, but even he might have been impressed with its success.
