Vintage Turtle 34mm Town & Country, Silver Dial, Black Leather Strap, Ref. 5035

While the Turtle watches are not widely known to the general public, for many Rolex collectors a Turtle watch is an iconic watch from the past.

In the early years, Rolex had an agreement with the company that produced movements for both Rolex and Gruen. Rolex would sell to the world outside the USA while Gruen had exclusive rights to sell in the United States. In the late 1930s, Zell Brothers approached Rolex about selling their Oyster watches in the Pacific Northwest on an exclusive basis. Rolex agreed to Zell’s overtures and used a different movement to avoid the restriction with its movement supplier.  Zell Brothers chose the name “Turtle” for what were in essence Rolex Oyster watches. So the first true Rolex Oysters sold in the United States were from Zell Brothers in Downtown Portland, Oregon. Zell Brothers sold the Rolex Oysters from around 1938 until around the end of 1942, after which they shifted to a Movado sourced watch to carry on the Zell Bros name.

This vintage Turtle Town & Country 5035 is a classic timepiece from Zell Brothers. With a 34mm 14k yellow gold case and an acrylic crystal, this timepiece is a true representation of vintage watches of the era. Its elegant silver dial features gold stick hour markers, adding to its timeless appeal. The watch is powered by a self-winding ETA 2451 caliber movement, known for its reliability and precision. It comes with a black leather strap, offering a comfortable and stylish fit for everyday wear. The names “Turtle”, “Turtle Timer”, “Duo-Matic”, and “Town and Country” were all registered trademarks of Zell Brothers Inc, Portland OR. “Turtle Timer” is from 1935. Duo-Matic was claimed as of 1946, and “Town and Country” in 1950.
