Is this reference 14060 the perfect Submariner? Many people think so. This reference 14060 has a nice combination of traditional features with updates. The primary feature is the purity of the no-date model. With a bezel insert that is still aluminum, its color will age in a way that is unique to this watch. This earlier reference 14060 also includes tritium lume, which will also develop a patina with age. Later versions of this reference included Superluminova, which although bright will not develop the colors that appeal to collectors. At 40mm, the case has the slender profile that became in later years more stout in appearance. Not least, the reference 14060 case still has lug holes, which simplifies switching bracelets and straps. The updates did not distract from the traditional appearance. The reference 14060 became the first no-date Submariner to have both a sapphire crystal and a Triplock crown, which also gave the watch an increased water resistance from 200 to 300 meters (1,000 feet). The movement was replaced with the caliber 3000, which at the time was not a certified Chronometer. This meant that the dial never included the words ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’, which makes the “two-liner” dial appear cleaner.
