Rolex Submariner 1680

Pre-Owned Rolex, 40mm, Submariner Date, Black Dial, Stainless Steel Bracelet, Ref. 1680

The Submariner 1680 is the first Submariner to offer the date feature and includes a magnified window above the date.  With a three-part case in stainless steel, a screw down case back and screw down crown, the Submariner was originally water resistant to 200 meters (600 feet). It includes a bi-directional revolving black bezel, matte black dial with luminous dot, baton, dagger numerals, and luminous Mercedes hands with a sweep central seconds hand.  Powered by the self-winding caliber 1575, this circa 1977 model includes a hacking seconds.  The caliber 1575 does not include the quickset date function but it does include the instantaneous date change at midnight –  it is sometimes described as a ‘quick switch, slow set’ movement.  This 1680 reference is the only Submariner Date to have an acrylic crystal.

For many people, this 40mm Submariner 1680 with date is what they think of when they think Submariner.  This is an honest watch.  It was worn as Rolex designed it and has the case marks and bezel scratches to show its previous life.  At some point, the bracelet was likely changed because although it is the correct 93150 Oyster bracelet that came with the watch, it is a newer date reference.  But like an oil painting with a bruised frame, the beauty is in the canvas, which for a watch is the dial.  This Mark 2 Black dial has the original matte finish that is unmarred or stained.  The tritium is evenly aged and has mellowed to a lovely pale manila color.  Not a watch stored away in a safe, this Submariner can be worn and admired for years to come.

Rolex is recognized throughout the world not only as a brand associated with luxury, but as a watch that is both luxurious and precise.  For Rolex, this hard-won and well-deserved recognition was never in doubt.  The founder, Hans Wilsdorf named the company Rolex so as to be pronounceable in any language as he anticipated the acclaim his company would receive due to relentless pursuit of precision and accuracy in a wristwatch.  Soon after its founding, Rolex produced the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, which was followed rapidly by receipt of a certificate of precision from the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.  From those roots Rolex built a legacy of innovation.  The Oyster watch was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch in 1926, followed by the first self-winding Perpetual rotor.  Building once again on innovation, the Datejust became the first self-winding wrist chronometer to include a date in a window on the dial.  Adventurous women and men who strive to achieve what was never before been achieved have chosen Rolex for their expedition, which both perpetuates the brand’s claim to precision and dependability as well as attests to its veracity.  Hans Wilsdorf may have anticipated the acclaim Rolex would someday achieve, but even he might have been impressed with its success.
