Rolex Datejust Ref. 16220

$6,295

Pre-owned Rolex 36mm Datejust, Silver Dial, Oyster Bracelet, Ref. 16220

Introduced in 1989, the reference 16220 upgraded the movement that was in the previous Datejust reference but maintained the unique bezel type.  This engine-turned bezel has decorative grooves that attractively reflect the light while still being formed from steel, as opposed to the gold of later fluted bezels.  This Datejust model was also the last to feature the engine-turned bezel.  The case was made from 316L steel (as opposed to the later 904L Oystersteel) and this case had thinner lugs, which gives this reference a sleeker appearance, if not a slightly more vintage appearance that has a charm all its own.  The 16220 included caliber 3135, which was used for over 30 years and is considered one of the most robust Rolex movements ever.  With this self-winding mechanical movement comes the Quickset, which allows the date to advance independent of the time.  One full rotation of the crown will advance the date by three days.

This watch is in very good condition, with an unmarred silver sunburst dial that has developed a slightly darkened color that is even throughout the dial.  The hands are bright and the tritium lume is intact.  The brushing on the top of the lugs is clear and the case edges are sharp, while the sides of the case have benefitted from a sympathetic and light polish.  The caseback includes the original brushing without nicks, while showing micro-scratches as typical of a pre-worn watch.  Under magnification, the bezel shows a few nicks between 6 and 8 o’clock and the sapphire crystal shows a pinprick sized chip near 6 o’clock and one at 12 o’clock, which although present should not distract from the attractiveness of the watch.  Finally, the Oyster styled bracelet has minimum stretch.  This is very nice watch that is both a solid performing Rolex watch and an opportunity to own an interesting watch from Rolex’s past.

Description

Rolex is recognized throughout the world not only as a brand associated with luxury, but as a watch that is both luxurious and precise.  For Rolex, this hard-won and well-deserved recognition was never in doubt.  The founder, Hans Wilsdorf named the company Rolex to be pronounceable in any language, as he anticipated the acclaim his company would receive due to relentless pursuit of precision and accuracy in a wristwatch.  Soon after its founding, Rolex produced the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, which was followed rapidly by receipt of a certificate of precision from the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.  From those roots Rolex built a legacy of innovation.  The Oyster watch was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch in 1926, followed by the first self-winding Perpetual rotor.  Building once again on innovation, the Datejust became the first self-winding wrist chronometer to include a date in a window on the dial.  Adventurous women and men who strive to make history have chosen Rolex for their expedition, which both perpetuates the brand’s claim to precision and dependability as well as attests to its veracity.  Hans Wilsdorf may have anticipated the acclaim Rolex would someday achieve, but even he might have been impressed with its success.
