Rolex’s Datejust is the archetype of the classic watch thanks to functions and aesthetics that never go out of fashion. Launched in 1945 for the 40th anniversary of Rolex, it was the first self winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial. This Datejust reference 16018 is a dramatic watch in 18k yellow gold, with an 18k yellow gold fluted bezel. The ornate bezel is among the oldest used by Rolex, with ridges that catch the light and draw in the eye. Offered in a 36mm case with a rare Onyx dial featuring no hour indexes, only the date reference. Attached is a 18k yellow gold jubilee bracelet with a folding clasp which shows some age but is in rather good condition considering age. This Datejust makes a dramatic statement.  Introduced to the reference 16018, the caliber 3035 was the first caliber fitted to a men’s Datejust to beat at 28,800vph, which gives a smooth sweep to the watch’s seconds hand. The other big change was the introduction of the Quickset function, which meant the date numeral in the watch’s three o’clock window could be forwarded just by using the crown, pulled out to its second position. The Datejust consolidated all the major innovations that Rolex had contributed to the modern wristwatch until then, and continues to be a hallmark of Rolex.  This watch is accompanied by a Rolex Factory Service Warranty Card, (expired) which serves to assure it’s originality.
