Rolex 18K Gold Black Submariner Ref: 16618

Preowned, Rolex 40mm 18K Gold Submariner, Black Dial, Oyster Bracelet Ref: 16618

This Submariner reference 16618 was the first all-gold Submariner to run on the caliber 3135 movement, which is also COSC certified.  While fairly similar in design to the caliber 3035 it replaced, the newer 3135 has a longer 50-hour power reserve. The Submariner 16618 was replaced by the reference 116618 that included a ceramic bezel and larger dial, crown guards and lugs.  While both this reference 16618 and the later 116618 have 40mm cases, many Rolex fans prefer the size of the dial and lugs of this reference 16618 as it is a link between vintage and modern Submariners.  The Oyster case of the Submariner 16618 also guarantees water resistance up to 300 meters (1,000 feet) through use of their screw-down Triplock crown and case-back. The Rolex Submariner 16618 includes an 18K Oyster bracelet fitted with a folding Oysterlock clasp with a fold-out wetsuit extension.  This earlier model has friction pins for the removable links which was a short lived iteration prior to Rolex introducing a screw system.  This bracelet is in extraordinary condition and affirms the watch has seen precious little use.

Rolex is recognized throughout the world not only as a brand associated with luxury, but as a watch that is both luxurious and precise.  For Rolex, this hard-won and well-deserved recognition was never in doubt.  The founder, Hans Wilsdorf named the company Rolex so as to be pronounceable in any language, as he anticipated the acclaim his company would receive due to its relentless pursuit of precision and accuracy.  Soon after its founding, Rolex produced the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, which was rapidly followed by a certificate of precision from the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.  From those roots Rolex built a legacy of innovation.  The Oyster watch was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch, followed by the first self-winding Perpetual rotor.  Building once again on innovation, the Datejust became the first self-winding wrist chronometer to include a date in a window on the dial.  Adventurous women and men who strive to achieve what was never before been achieved have chosen Rolex for their expedition, which both perpetuates the brand’s claim to precision and dependability as well as attests to its veracity.  Hans Wilsdorf may have anticipated the acclaim Rolex would someday achieve, but even he might have been impressed its success.
