Vintage 35mm x 30mm Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse (3938)
Presented here is an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse “Jumbo” automatic model on an integrated gold bracelet. Introduced into the Patek line in about 1968, it still remains a very popular reference today, offered in a number of sizes, dial colors and configurations.
On each side of the “SWISS” at the foot of the dial are a flanking pair of “sigma” letters just below the 6 o’clock marker. The sigma symbols indicate that the hands on a watch were made of solid gold. Most of these Golden Ellipse watches from this era include a navy blue dial, but the dial on this watch is a beautiful and unusual gold with surrounding white band for the Roman numerals that mark the time. The dial is in perfect, original condition.
The watch is powered by one of Patek’s finest automatic movements; the caliber 240. While the brand had already produced a superb automatic movement with the Caliber 12-600, they needed a new slimmer movement to compete with the quartz watches. Slender and sleek, the new caliber 240 owed its slim profile to a micro-rotor that was engineered to turn unidirectionally, eliminating the need for a reversing gear and the associated friction losses, as well as adding a heavier 22K rotor to improve the power reserve.
Overall, this Patek 3938 “Jumbo” is a very beautiful and quite rare watch. If you are looking for something refined, elegant and striking, it is difficult to think of a better piece. The watch comes on its original integrated Patek-made solid gold bracelet and was recently serviced.
