The Omega Speedmaster is an iconic wristwatch with a rich history. Introduced in 1957, it was originally designed as a sports and racing chronograph. However, it gained legendary status when it was chosen by NASA for the moon program, becoming the first watch worn on the moon in 1969. Since then, the Speedmaster has been a symbol of precision, durability, and adventure, making it one of the most renowned and sought-after timepieces in the world.

This is one of our favorite vintage Speedmaster references. One thing that makes this special is that it represents the era when the whole world was united in moon fever. Omega had created the first special Gold Speedmasters in 1969 for presentation to the astronauts.  The casebacks on those gold watches were boldly engraved with “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON, APOLLO XI 1969.” Even though it was a great marketing move, it was also an innocent expression of joy and exuberance by Omega in having played a part in that amazing achievement.

At that time, Apollo XI and Apollo XII had recently landed on the moon and the crew of Apollo 12 had visited Japan, where they were enthusiastically received. Watch collectors believe that the Omega distributor in Japan asked Omega to create a steel version of the gold watch that was presented to the astronauts. This SW-AXI has the same caseback and same bracelet as the gold version. This Straight writing Apollo XI (SW-AXI) was a Japan only market release, with as low as 300 watches.

This reference wasn’t worn on the moon like the 105.012, but it was released at the same time that the moon landings were happening, and it is the result of Omega’s becoming conscious of what that really meant for the Speedmaster. Wearing this watch makes us conscious of that same moment when the excitement of the moon landings was at its peak.

This watch was purchased by the previous owner from Japan and was serviced by a local watchmaker in 2023. The case doesn’t look unpolished but has strong edges. The dial has no scratches, missing paint or dents. The lume appears original; it glows and fades as expected for tritium. Bezel has an overall fading paint that changes appearance if you hold it at an angle. It appears slightly blue in certain angels and light. The bracelet is the correct 1116 that was released with the original watches.
