Omega Constellation Ref. 2852-8SC

Vintage Omega 35mm Constellation Silver Dial, Brown Leather Strap, Ref. 2852-8SC

The Omega Constellation was originally created to commemorate Omega’s chronometer successes in international observatory trials. The name “Constellation” was inspired by the stars, reflecting the watch’s precision and reliability. Over the decades, the Constellation has been updated with new movements and designs, reflecting the changing styles and technologies of the time. Despite these updates, the Constellation has always remained true to its original concept of combining elegance with precision, making it a timeless classic in the world of luxury watches.

Omega released the first Constellation in 1952, and this watch presented here dates from the 1950’s with characteristics that would go on to define the collection over time. The dial has the Constellation branding on it, as well as an applied star logo. The piepan dial also includes cross hairs and arrowhead styled applied markers. While the lume no longer glows due to natural deterioration, it is still present, and the dial has some speckling that is so typical of Constellations from this era and which adds to the vintage appeal. The caseback features a depiction of the Geneva Observatory with eight stars that represent the eight observatory chronometer competitions Omega won in the 20th century. As expected, this Constellation was a chronometer-rated watch. The watch is paired with an attractive leather strap from Italy. At 35mm, this was a large watch for its time, and still wears large on the wrist, partly due to the larger dial compared to the bezel. There is a reason why vintage piepan Constellations are sought after and prized by new and old collectors alike; they are just so nice.

Omega is one of the world’s most recognizable luxury watch brands.  Although founded in 1848, the company did not become known as Omega until 1894, when the company took the name of its highly successful new watch movement.  The revolutionary movement used a single crown for both winding and time setting.  Success followed success when in 1905, due to its commitment to accuracy, Omega became the official timekeeper for Swiss sporting events.  Later in 1932, Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games.  To mark Omega’s 100th year anniversary, Omega introduced the watch that would become one of the world’s most popular watches, the Seamaster.  While these are remarkable achievements, the watch that made Omega a legend among watchmakers was the Speedmaster, the only watch to survive the brutal NASA testing requirements and the only watch certified by NASA for use in Space.  It is no surprise that Omega watches are recognized today as spectacularly rugged tool watches hiding in a luxury watch.
