New Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 Dark Side of the Moon Dial 31192443001001
This watch is one of the most unusual and striking that Omega has ever produced. While the movement is based on the same 1861 movement in the Hesalite Speedmaster Moonwatch, the Apollo 8 Dark Side of the Moon holds the caliber 1869, which is essentially the same 1861 but with enhanced finishing and engravings befitting the theme. In this 44.25 mm model, the blackened movement has been laser-ablated to represent the moon’s surface. The near side can be seen through the blackened skeletonised dial, while the far side can be seen through the case back. The entire watch is black ceramic and includes varnished yellow chronograph hands and a Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale. A perforated black leather strap with a yellow rubber interior beautifully matches the watch. The case back completes the theme with engravings of APOLLO 8, DEC 1968, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, and WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE.   This is a special Speedmaster worthy of a special mission.

Description

Omega is one of the world’s most recognizable luxury watch brands. Although founded in 1848, the company did not become known as Omega until 1894, when the company took the name of its highly successful new watch movement. The revolutionary movement used a single crown for both winding and time setting. Success followed success when in 1905, due to its commitment to accuracy, Omega became the official timekeeper for Swiss sporting events. Later in 1932, Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. To mark Omega’s 100th year anniversary, Omega introduced the watch that would become one of the world’s most popular watches, the Seamaster. While these are remarkable achievements, the watch that made Omega a legend among watchmakers was the Speedmaster, the only watch to survive the brutal NASA testing requirements and the only watch certified by NASA for use in Space. It is no surprise that Omega watches are recognized today as spectacularly rugged tool watches hiding in a luxury watch.
