Corum $5 Gold Coin Watch Ref. 553056

$2,695

Pre-Owned Corum 24.4mm 5 Dollar Gold Coin Watch Ref. 553056

To answer the obvious question, yes, this is a real coin.  Corum is  able to slice a thin layer of the coin to form the caseback while leaving a thicker layer for the dial face and including a watch movement.  The addition of the watch hands and the Corum name on the face of the coin make this a useful time keeper, while barely altering the coin image.  Not to worry about the Secret Service descending upon your home, altering coins is legal as long as you do not try to make them into a different type of currency.  Which is probably why several U.S. Presidents wore one of these gold coin watches.

This gold coin watch is an original, vintage Corum watch and brings with it both papers and leather watch roll. It is not a large watch by modern standards, but having a gold coin attached to your wrist will likely not go unnoticed.   More than simply cutting a coin in half and drilling a hole in the middle, Corum has made a finely crafted watch.  This feels like a solid watch thanks to the ridged coin edges that surround the coin and attach to the lugs.  A jeweled crown almost seems excessive, but actually is in perfect balance with the watch.  This watch is a surprise in many ways, not only for finding a watch made from a gold coin, but finding how nice a watch it makes.

Description

Corum watchmakers was founded in 1955, in the center of fine watchmaking in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.  They are best known for the coin watches they introduced to the world in 1964.  As expected from a brand that turns coins into watches, Corum produces eclectic watches that depict wild animals, exotic scenery and whimsy in limited editions.  In spite of their exuberant and fun spirit, they have not forgotten that they are still a Swiss watchmaker and continue to produce fine watches.
