Vintage 41mm Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaut ‘AOPA’ (809)
The Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute was introduced in 1962 as a space-oriented evolution of the iconic Navitimer, created specifically for the demands of manned spaceflight. Its defining feature was a 24-hour dial, allowing astronauts to distinguish between day and night during missions where the normal day/night cycle could not be observed. The Cosmonaute gained particular historical significance when American astronaut Scott Carpenter wore a prototype during his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission on May 24, 1962, making it one of the earliest Swiss mechanical chronographs to travel into space. Following the mission, Breitling refined the design and introduced the Cosmonaute to the public, combining its distinctive 24-hour display with the Navitimer’s signature circular slide-rule bezel. Over the decades, the Cosmonaute has remained one of Breitling’s most historically significant aviation watches, representing the intersection of traditional mechanical watchmaking, aviation, and the dawn of the Space Age.
