The Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 was produced from 1971 to 1984. It was upgraded from the Explorer I with the addition of a date feature and an additional orange hand with the external 24 hours graduated bezel. The movement used in this watch is the caliber 1575. This Explorer II has a serial number that indicates a production year of 1977, as well as a Mark II dial that has been recognized as produced between 1972 to 1977, and finally a Mark III bezel that has been recognized as being in production from 1977 to 1980. The Oyster bracelet is a Rolex USA bracelet stamped “78”, with moderate stretch. Thus, the watch appears to carry its original components. In addition, the case is sharp and appears unpolished, with slight swirls from wear but with no nicks. The beauty of a watch is the dial, and this matte black dial is in lovely condition, free of marks or debris. The tritium lume is intact and has aged to an attractive manilla color. The 24 hour hand, which was originally orange has faded to nearly match the color of the lume patina, giving it what some collectors call a “ghost hand.” The crystal is the correct acrylic with cyclops and is clear.
