This Rolex Day Date includes an 18K white gold case, white gold case back and an 18K white gold bracelet. As normal for a Day Date, it includes a magnification cyclops on the sapphire crystal at 3 o’clock and the day window at 12 o’clock, which can be adjusted through a quickset. The white dial includes polished Roman numeral hour markers and gold applied hour and minute hands. The President style bracelet includes an invisible folding clasp. This watch comes complete with box and papers.
This 7004A reference chronograph is one of the most recognized chronographs from Wittnauer. With its burgundy bezel set against the black dial, it is both distinctive and attractive. The dial on this vintage 7004A is unblemished, with clean unfaded lettering. The matte coloring is uniform throughout. Tritium lume was normal for this vintage, and the lume on the indexes, hour hands and bezel pip are intact and appear original. Particularly attractive is the dark, manilla colored lume in the hands and lollipop chronograph hand. The hands themselves are clean without stains. The arrowhead on the end of the minute hand is original and marks this as a later issue, as earlier watches did not include it. The bi-directional bezel operates smoothly in either direction, and has scratches and nicks commensurate with its age. The stainless steel case also shows scratches from wear, although it is clear of major nicks. The case has been sympathetically polished and retains its edges. Powered by a Landeron 248, this manual wound movement is a robust movement that is not complicated to service. The stainless steel bracelet carries the Wittnauer logo and is marked Kestenmade Bambi on the inner clasp.
While reviewing the details of this watch, we should not overlook what made this reference a favorite from Wittnauer. It is a very attractive design and well balanced, with the burgundy highlight in the regatta countdown section of the sub-register matching the burgundy bezel. At 40mm, many consider this the perfect size, perhaps as it fits a wide range of wrist sizes. The curved lugs balance nicely on the wrist and it is comfortable on the wrist. Easy to understand why this is a favorite.
The Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver was made famous when Admiral Byrd testified to the reliability of his Croton watch during his expectation to Antartica, which faced many unexpected perils. There are several variations in the case and dial designs for the model with the same name, which allows a person to find their personal favorite for an historic watch. This watch has a bi-directional bezel that shows wear around the outer edge but is free of nicks and chips of paint that are often found on vintage bezels. The case has been sympathetically polished, and the hands appear to have been repainted when viewed under magnification. The beauty of the watch is the dial that is unmarred and evenly black throughout. The splash of red in the sub-register countdown together with the tritium indexes that have aged to a darker yellow also serve to highlight the dial. This watch is powered by a Landeron 248, which has a somewhat unusual chronograph action, with the top push starting the stopwatch and the bottom stopping as well as resetting. Overall, this is an attractive vintage watch that was previously worn and appreciated but not abused. on its new, black leather strap it offers years of enjoyment to a future owner.
This beautifully aged chronograph from Universal Genève has a silver dial aged to a cream color and dark manila colored lume, which nicely compliments its metallic blue hands. All lume on the hands and dial are intact. There is some aging on the dial near the sub-register edges, which is visible under magnification but does not detract from the otherwise attractive dial. The size is typical for a watch of this era but 33mm will likely seem small for a modern watch, although with its large crown and high domed crystal, it still presents well on the wrist. The stainless steel case shows wear marks as expected in a vintage watch but it is free of large nicks or gouges. The watch is attached to a vintage stainless steel bracelet, which is marked Zell Brothers, a Portland Oregon super jeweler who established a multi floor city block store that was an official retailer of all of the highest level brands. Zell Brothers also had many watches and bracelets private labeled with their name. The bracelet is marked “Zell Brothers” and “G. F.” with their goats head logo for Gay Freres the manufacturer, also marked steelinox and Swiss made with a date stamp of 3/62. Overall, it is an attractive watch from a highly regarded manufacturer.
