Vintage Omega Speedmaster Ref: 145.022-69ST

$8,750

Pre-owned Vintage Omega 42mm Speedmaster Black Dial, Leather Strap, Ref: 145.022-69ST

There are many features to consider when evaluating a vintage Speedmaster.  While the individual pieces are important, it is easy to overlook the most important question – is it an attractive watch?  Does the over all watch, warts and all, appeal to you?  To us, this is an attractive watch that should please most Speedmaster enthusiasts.  The bezel, dial and case show some aging as expected without distracting blemishes or features that overwhelm the watch.

The case has likely seen a light, sympathetic polish, but the lugs are bright, the brushing on the top is clear, and the edges are intact.  The bezel is the correct DON, with some fading near the 12 o’clock position, but it is free of large marks, nicks and gouges that are often seen in bezels from this era.  The correct stepped dial shows no visible discoloration or marks.  It has begun the journey to the tropics, which is mostly evident when the watch is held in direct sunlight.  (In time, many of these dials will age to a brown color that is called tropical.)  There is a mark on the dial near 10 o’clock that can be seen under magnification, as well as some lifting of the paint near 5 o’clock that seems to be caused by lume that has drifted off the index onto the dial.  The lume on the minute hand is intact but darkened, while the lume on the hour hand has disappeared.  Most of the tritium lume is visible and has turned a combination of tan and darker olive, with the 5 o’clock hour marker showing the most deterioration and the darkest shade.  The correct baton hands still stand in contrast to the dial, making this a very legible watch.  However, under magnification the hands, including sub-register hands, show speckling from aging.  Flipping the watch, this reference has a so-called smooth back, meaning that the etching that appeared on later Speedmasters is not present.  Powered by the caliber 861, this manual winding movement is appealing to many Speedmaster fans.
